What is a Stone Benchtop Overlay?
Stone benchtop overlays are a thin layer of stone laid across the top of an existing benchtop to give it a refreshed, modern aesthetic. This method avoids the need for demolishing older benchtops, making it a cost-effective and efficient way to upgrade your kitchen.
The choice of stone for an overlay can vary, but it is typically a thinner material. Porcelain at 12mm is the best-suited option due to its durability, heat resistance, and sleek design.
United Stone Melbourne™’s stone overlays are ideal for homeowners who want to retain their current benchtop structure while refreshing their tired kitchen with a sleek, modern surface and contemporary design.

Stone Benchtop Overlay vs. New Stone Benchtop
Stone Benchtop Overlay on Existing Laminate
A laminate benchtop overlay involves installing a 12mm stone layer over your existing 33mm laminate benchtop, which serves as the substrate. This process creates a 47mm edge, including a few millimetres to account for adhesives and bonding materials.
New Stone Benchtop with a New Substrate
With a new stone benchtop, a 12mm stone is installed over a 25mm new substrate, creating a 40mm edge.
New benchtops require a substrate, and in most cases, your existing benchtop can serve this purpose. This makes overlays practical and cost-effective by avoiding removal fees and the expense of a new substrate.

This section answers common questions about the overlay process, benefits, and what to expect when transforming your existing benchtops with premium stone materials like porcelain or natural stone.
Why Choose Stone Benchtop Overlays?
Stone benchtop overlays are a stylish and durable solution for homeowners who want a modern kitchen upgrade without the hassle of a full replacement. They eliminate the need for demolition, saving time and money while providing a sleek, sophisticated finish. The installation process is quick and efficient, with most projects completed within a single day. If you want an affordable and efficient way to transform your kitchen, stone overlays are the perfect solution.
How Much Does a Stone Benchtop Overlay Cost?
The cost of a stone benchtop overlay depends on factors such as the size and material of the benchtop. By eliminating the need for demolition and extensive labour, you save both time and money while achieving a premium, high-quality finish.

Can I Overlay a Laminate Benchtop?
Yes, laminate benchtops are excellent candidates for the overlay process. Stone or Porcelain overlays can be laid directly on top of existing laminate benchtops without the need for demolition. This ensures minimal disruption while achieving a high-quality, seamless transformation. Whether your benchtop is laminate, marble, or granite, overlays provide a stylish and functional kitchen upgrade.
Do I Need a Plumber or Other Tradespeople?
If your benchtops have utilities such as a sink, tap, cooktop, or electricity connected to them, you will need a plumber or electrician. We handle everything for you, ensuring that appliances are disconnected before installation and reconnected once the job is complete. This is all managed seamlessly on the same day for a smooth and hassle-free process.
What is a Stone Veneer Benchtop?
A stone veneer benchtop is essentially the same as a stone benchtop overlay. Both terms refer to the process of applying a thin layer of premium stone, such as porcelain or granite, over an existing benchtop. With a Veneer or Overlay you achieve a practical and visually stunning kitchen enhancement without requiring demolition.
